Soul Prescription for August 24-26th 2018: We Gone-a Have-a Funky Good Time!

While contemplating life’s annoyances; specifically the increasingly  aggressive and erratic drivers on the packed highways and interstates of metro Atlanta this week, I choked back the urge to shift into road-rage behavior, stifled my urge to shout and cuss everybody out, took a deep breath, and clicked shuffle on my Spotify library of songs.

The ancestors were watching out for me and did not let me down. The unmistakable sound of Soul Brother #1, James Brown blasted from the car speakers, “Hit it.”

Next thing I knew, I’d completely forgotten about the cars inching along beside me.  I fell into this soulful groove, singing along, “We gonna have a funky good time!  we gotta  have a funky good time!  We gotta take ya hi-i-i-igher!” [rhythm section:  den den den den-uhn! den den den den-uhn!]

I chanted and jammed and grooved for 10 solid minutes as the soulful sounds of the J.B.s became my mantra for funky well-being! I was smiling instead of frowning, my cares drifted away as I repeated “we gotta take ya hi-i-i-i-gher!!  [rhythm section:  den den den den-uhn! den den den den-uhn!]

The power of soul changed my outlook and consequently, my attitude.  That 55 minute ride didn’t seem so bad, after all.  I had time to notice how beautiful the late summer trees are.  I felt extra swaggadocious rocking my head from left to the right while shouting “we gotta take ya hi-i-i-igher!” at the top of my lungs.  I sipped on my coconut water and marveled at how refreshing it tasted.  A smile graced my face as I no longer felt the need to side-eye or judge my fellow commuters’ driving habits.  My breathing stabilized and deepened. By the end of the song, I felt calm and relaxed, like I’d just finished meditating…yeah… that ‘s right—a funky meditation!

Come to the River—I Am Water, Water is Life

Water falls, flows and ripples and cascades in rain, streams, creeks, lakes, ponds, rivers, waterfalls and oceans. Life on this planet cannot sustain itself without water, ever-recycling and reproducing as liquid or solid. She is strong and fierce in the form of a typhoon; gentle and delicate as  the early morning mist over a garden.  She constitutes 70% of my physical body.  She sustains me, nourishes me. She regulates my systems. Water moves through my body to cleanse me of toxins.

 I am Water.  Water is Life.  I Give Thanks.

Yemoja.    Oshun.     Namakaokaha`i.

I express my emotions with water:

  • Water is apt to fill my eyes when I feel joy.
  • Water is apt to feel my eyes when I feel grateful.
  • Water is apt to fill my eyes when I feel empathy.
  • Water is apt to fill my eyes when I feel and experience love.
  • Water will issue forth from my body when I feel orgasmic.
  • Water is apt to seep through my pores when I feel my parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, “fight or flight.”
  • Water is apt to seep through my pores when I feel overheated, to help cool my body temperature.
  • Water is apt to fall from my eyes when I feel physical and emotional pain.
  • Water is apt to fall from my eyes to protect me—to keep me from committing murderous acts when faced with gross injustices.  In that mindspace, without the protective signal of watering eyes, and conscious thought, I am apt to express my aquability like a tornado—powerful and turbulent, unpredictable, indiscriminately destructive, without thoughts of consequences.  I give thanks for protection!

I Am Water. Water is Life.

  Mami Wata.  Atabey.  Tefnut. Nāmaka.  Ganga.    

During a recent visit to sacred water in the north Georgia mountains, at the beginning (or end) of the Appalachian Trail, I stood in the awe, face to face with a beautiful cascading waterfall. Tears of joy came to my eyes as I felt the waters swirling around my calves. I felt the water…not just the sensation of the wetness on my skin—I felt the water at the core of my being and my connection to her, and to all of nature she supports.

Oya/Iañsa.    Ezili.   Chalchiuhtlicue.  Sedzibwa.  

This space was magical—we the people who gathered there, individually, in pairs, and in groups of three—people who, on the surface, seemed to have little in common, collectively experienced the Spirit of Oneness. The power of the water cascading into the intimate swimming hole exuded a peaceful vibe that we all tuned in to. It was One Love, One Perfect Love in those moments, a sense of what is indeed possible in this world when we allow ourselves to immerse ourselves in the beauty that is peace without the threat of fear.

As I gave thanks—-to the water, for the water, I remembered the water keepers of Standing Rock, the water activists of Flint, Michigan, the water protectors of the Amazon, and the water keepers all over the world; I felt strengthened, I was uplifted. I felt CONNECTED.

I left my offerings of rose petals, tobacco, sweet words, and sage for the Water.  I vowed to be a more conscious protector of water, a more conscious consumer of water, to show more respect for my life-sustainer, the life-sustainer of us all.

 

On the short hike back to the truck, with gratitude filling my spirit, I received a message, “When water is still, shallow and stagnant, it is a puddle…landlocked, subject to dry up and fade away… You, like water, as water,  must stay vibrant, keep moving, stay fresh in mind and body.”  I smiled to myself, thankful, because my automatic response was, “I Am Water. Water is Life!”

Anuket.     Nammu Namuu.    Sedna.

Yes…the entire way home, and the days since, these words reverberated in my entire being,“I Am Water. Water is Life.


SOUL PRESCRIPTION:  Visit a body of water. Sit still, breathe deeply until you feel yourself relax. Clear your mind and feel the presence of the water.  Touch the water. Speak words of love and gratitude to the water. Give thanks and receive the gift of peace that water can share.

If there is no body of water accessible to you, place a clean glass or ceramic receptacle of clear water on your altar. Sit still, breathe deeply until you feel yourself relax. Clear your mind and be conscious of the presence of the water. Speak words of love and gratitude to the water.  Give thanks and share the gift of that blessed water with your garden.

Winter Soulstice/Winter Solstice 2017

2017 has been the “Year of Grand Reactions.”

      It’s been an exhausting year of lies, fears, betrayals,  and injustices.  In disbelief…then in resignation,  we’ve witnessed the unsavory and unsound practices of the most powerful politicians on the planet.  Actions of a few are negatively impacting all of us.  We are relentlessly bombarded with bad news, driving us to the point of living in a state of constant fear.  We are being conditioned to believing the worst about everyone and everything. We are told our salvation and success lies in sheer military might, but history tells us differently.  Do we remember the lessons of the past?

    On this shortest day and the  longest dark night, the Winter Solstice  in the Northern Hemisphere invites us to slow down our busy lives and and take the time to breathe, look inward and remember…and then decide which memories are worth keeping, while discarding the memories that no longer serve us.  On December 21, 2017, let us take the time to look inward, and remember: to reflect on “what is,” and to then envision what we would like “to be.”  We CAN change the course of things for the better, if we  can put our fears aside and consciously decide on how we are to live.


Rosemary for Remembrance

     This magical herb from the Mediterranean is a very helpful memory aid.  Since ancient times, rosemary has been know to boost one’s memory, simply by sniffing.  The health benefits of rosemary are many:  it can also improve mood, relieve pain, protect the immune system, reduce inflammation, stimulate circulation, detoxify the body, prevent premature aging, heal skin conditions and protect the body from bacterial infections. As you can see, rosemary does more than make food taste delicious!

ROSEMARY Winter Soulstice Remembrance Cleansing                          what you will use

 

  1. notebook and writing instrument
  2. white sage or natural tobacco
  3. white candles
  4. warm bath with epsom salts and essential oil of rosemary, rosemary sprigs
  5. peppermint tea (for internal heat)
  6. Burn white sage and allow smoke to fill the space, cleansing you and your area of negative energy. Bless yourself, and your surroundings. Give thanks.
  7. Draw warm bathwater, using epsom salts and essential oil of rosemary.  If you have fresh rosemary, crush sprigs and toss into your bath.  Allow the aroma of rosemary to fill the room.
  8. Light and carefully arrange candles around the bathtub.
  9. Create a space for your cup of tea, and for your notebook.
  10. Relax and luxuriate in the bathwater.  Allow the aroma of rosemary to envelope you.
  11. Do you remember who YOU are?  Ask yourself a series of questions and write down your answers:   ♥At my core, am I the same person inside, that I was as a  child?    ♥What are some of  most important lessons I’ve learned?   ♥What do I believe about myself and the world?  ♥Am I consciously dreaming my own reality, or am I simply reacting to the chaos that surrounds me?    ♥Am I kind? (considerate, helpful, compassionate)     ♥Do I know how to give love and receive love?   ♥Do I use my free will?    ♥Do I feel connected?
  12. Reflect on your answers, then BELIEVE and SPEAK positive words into the darkness of the Solstice night. Positive words plant positive seeds for your new powerful reality.       Asé! Amen! And So It Is!
  13. As you exit the bathtub, envision your troubles, doubts and fears flowing down the drain along with the water.  Asé! Amen! And So It Is!

Sip ginger tea for good health.  Ginger tea has many beneficial properties, including the ability to fight pain and inflammation in the body.

My favorite ginger root tea recipe:

1 quart filtered water

2 inches of unpeeled ginger root, chopped chunkily

1 inch turmeric root or 1 teaspoon turmeric powder (more/less to taste)

lemon

raw, local honey

BOIL chopped roots in water (covered) for 10 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes. Serve with slices of lemon and raw honey.

Be in & of NATURE/COMMUNITY. We are of the natural world, even as many of us increasingly spend more time in the artificial world of man-made structures and times. Most of us  work, live, eat, recreate/entertain ourselves and sleep inside structures); venturing outside to enter a vehicle, to venture to go into another structure, back to a vehicle, and back inside to our home structure.

Walk outside and observe the world around you. If you are unable to walk, sit outside.  Experience and enjoy the weather…the winter sun, the cloudy sky, the rainy day, the snowy landscape, the brisk wind.  Do you know the types of the trees and plants in your yard, on your grounds, in your neighborhood? Look around and ask yourself, “Who are my neighbors (trees, people, animals, plants, bodies of water, insects)?”

Restrict Eliminate  the use of herbicides and weed killers that are harmful to beneficial plants, bees, animals and humans.

A Soul Prescription for the Autumnal Equinox 2017

   

♥ Transitions, Shifts & Changes

When I think of autumn, several things immediately come to mind:  the warm Earth tones of the season when trees reveal the majesty and beauty of their nature in gorgeous hues of brilliant yellows, burnished golds, deep plum purples, rich ruby reds and leaves the color of rust and brown paper bags.  

    Fall is the time of year for real pumpkins that grow in patches,  along with the ubiquitous “pumpkin-spice-flavored” lattes, muffins, cookies and other assorted sweet-treats that suddenly appear in mid-September.  Fall brings the annual airing of “Charlie Brown’s It’s the Great Pumpkin” episode, elaborate Halloween displays of candy, party decorations, and insensitive, culturally-appropriated costumes.   El Dia del Los Muertos.  Roasted turkeys. Sweet Potato pies.  Harvest time.

     For me, the end of fall is marked by that last Thursday in November that my Grandmother does not celebrate, but encourages us to gather together as family and break bread. As she says, “Because most people have this time off work to travel home and see each other.”

The onset of Fall 2017 shows the high energetic levels of the season. Turbulent weather and geological events, combined with illogical human governance are swiftly ushering in change.   Will we merely go along with the changes, like a leaf on the wind, or will we be active participants and consciously direct positive change?

 

 


The Remedy

Uncloak and reveal our true identities. It’s time to be as real as we can be. Each of us came to this life with a gift of service to contribute to the greater collective. We must contribute our gifts for the good of ALL, just as trees let go and drop their leaves to nourish the ground they fall on, so that things may grow.

Be flexible enough to bend and not break.

Live in community. Do you know your neighbors? Do you have a circle of family, extended family, and friends that you collaborate and share resources, space, and knowledge with? Develop Community.

Eat seasonally.

Visit your local farmer or farmer’s market, meet the people who grow your food, and get local, fresh produce grown in your area:  apples, artichokes, arugula, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chard, chiles, chicories, eggplant, fennel, figs, garlic, grapes, green beans, horseradish, kale, kolrabi, leeks, lemongrass, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, onions, parsnips, peppers, pears, persimmons, pomegranates, potatoes, pumpkins, quinces, radishes, rutabagas, shallots, spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatillos, turnips, winter squash, and zucchini.

Go on a social media diet:  limit your consumption of information to a pre-determined, allotted amount of time each day. Don’t allow the constant stream of negativity bring your spirits down. Take a break, which leads us to…                                                                                                                                                                …Experience the world outside!                                                                                            Spend time out in the fresh air! Also known as “Holy Basil” or “The Queen of Herbs,” it is often incorporated into ayurvedic medicine and homeopathic remedies for reducing stress, boosting immunity, promoting a healthy metabolism, and soothing cough and cold symptoms. In Hinduism it is used in prayers for health and prosperity.  Tulsi has delicious flavor notes of citrus, mint, cinnamon, pepper and clove.  Steep tea for 5-10 minutes.
